Three separate roles
A drawn hand trap is live right away during your opponent's turn, while a starter or board breaker matters on your turn: the tool keeps the three apart.
Draw by draw
See how many draws it takes before your opponent almost certainly hands you the card you're missing.
Mulcharmy Purulia, Mulcharmy Fuwalos and Mulcharmy Meowls are hand traps: if you control no cards, you can discard the monster (Quick Effect) to draw 1 card each time your opponent performs a certain kind of Summon this turn. Purulia reacts to Normal and Special Summons from the hand, Fuwalos to Special Summons from the Deck or Extra Deck, and Meowls to Special Summons from any GY or banishment.
Your opponent then has two options: stop early and end on a weak board, or keep comboing while you draw. During the End Phase, if you have more cards in hand than the number of cards your opponent controls + 6, you must shuffle cards from your hand into the Deck at random until you reach that number.
Not every drawn card is worth the same: a hand trap interrupts the combo in progress, a board breaker clears the board on your turn, and a starter lets you play afterwards. This calculator gives your odds for each of these roles based on the makeup of your Yu-Gi-Oh! Deck.
Letting N the number of cards remaining in your Deck, K the number of cards of a given role it contains (starters, hand traps or board breakers), and n the number of cards drawn with Mulcharmy, this is a draw without replacement described by the hypergeometric distribution. The probability of drawing no card of that role is:
P(0) = C(N−K, n) / C(N, n)
The probability of drawing at least 1 is therefore 1 − P(0). For the “at least 1 of the 3” line, K is the sum of starters, hand traps and board breakers. The calculator applies this formula for every number of cards drawn, from 1 to 15.
FAQ
They are hand traps you discard when you control no cards: for the rest of that turn, you draw 1 card for each matching Summon your opponent performs (from the hand for Purulia, from the Deck or Extra Deck for Fuwalos, from any GY or banishment for Meowls).
It depends entirely on your opponent's combo: an opponent who stops gives you 1 or 2 cards, while a full combo can give 8 or more. The calculator's table shows your odds for every number of draws, from 1 to 15.
It is a draw without replacement, described by the hypergeometric distribution: the probability depends on the number of cards left in the Deck, the number of hand traps it contains, and the number of cards drawn. The calculator applies this formula to hand traps, starters and board breakers.
Not always: during the End Phase, if your hand exceeds the number of cards your opponent controls + 6, you shuffle random cards into the Deck down to that number. Hand traps you used during your opponent's turn are no longer in your hand by then.
