What does Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay do in Yu-Gi-Oh!?

Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay is a Level 7 DARK Dragon monster (2400 ATK / 1800 DEF) played as a hand trap against decks that go through Link Monsters. If your opponent Special Summons one or more Link Monsters, you can Special Summon it from your hand, draw cards equal to the number of Link Monsters your opponent controls + 1, then shuffle cards from your hand into the Deck equal to the number of Link Monsters they control.

The net result is always +1 card, but you see more cards than you keep: against 2 Link Monsters, you draw 3 cards and shuffle back 2 of your choice. That makes it an excellent way to dig for a specific hand trap or board breaker during your opponent's turn.

Its second effect (Quick Effect) negates an opposing card or effect that targets a monster you control, by discarding 1 card. Each effect can only be used once per turn. This calculator covers the first effect: it helps you decide how many copies to play in your Yu-Gi-Oh! Deck.

The mathematical formula

Every calculation is a draw without replacement (hypergeometric law). With N cards in the Deck, h cards in the opening hand, P copies of Phantazmay, K copies of the card you want and d cards drawn by the effect (opposing Link Monsters + 1):

P(Phantazmay) = 1 − C(N−P, h) / C(N, h)

P(effect) = 1 − C(N−h−K, d) / C(N−h, d)

P(total) = P(card in hand) + P(not the card, but Phantazmay) × P(effect)

The total only counts Phantazmay's effect in hands that do not already hold the card you want: that is what avoids counting the same hands twice.
