What is Allure of Darkness in Yu-Gi-Oh!?

Allure of Darkness is a Normal Spell Card: draw 2 cards, then banish 1 DARK monster from your hand. If you have no DARK monster in your hand, you must send your entire hand to the Graveyard.

It's therefore a gamble: the card can draw you 2 cards "for free" if you have a DARK monster to banish (often a large voluntary banish for an archetype like Fiend/DARK), but it can also cost you your entire hand if you have none. The risk depends directly on the density of DARK monsters remaining in your Yu-Gi-Oh! Deck.

The more DARK monsters your Deck contains, the better your odds of drawing one and resolving the card without loss. This calculator lets you estimate that risk before activating the card, or adjust the number of DARK copies in your Deck to make it more reliable.

The mathematical formula

Letting N the number of cards remaining in your Deck and K the number of DARK monsters it contains, drawing 2 cards is a draw without replacement described by the hypergeometric law. The probability of drawing no DARK monster is:

P(0) = C(N−K, 2) / C(N, 2)

If you have no DARK monster already in hand, the probability of resolving the card without discarding your hand is therefore 1 − P(0). If you already have one, the resolution is guaranteed regardless of the draw result. The calculator applies this logic directly, as well as the full distribution of the number of DARK monsters that can be drawn.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Allure of Darkness

It's a Normal Spell Card: draw 2 cards, then banish 1 DARK monster from your hand, or send your entire hand to the Graveyard if you have none.

It's a random draw without replacement, described by the hypergeometric law, over the 2 cards drawn. The probability depends on the number of cards remaining in the Deck and the number of DARK monsters it contains. If you already have a DARK monster in hand, the resolution is guaranteed.

You must send all the cards in your hand to the Graveyard — a potentially very heavy cost if your hand contains other useful cards.

Increase the number of DARK monsters in your Deck, or only activate the card when you already have a DARK monster in hand to voluntarily banish.
