What is Pot of Extravagance in Yu-Gi-Oh!?
Pot of Extravagance is a Normal Spell Card that turns your Extra Deck into a card-draw engine. At the start of your Main Phase 1, you can banish face-down 3 or 6 cards chosen randomly from your Extra Deck, then draw 1 card for every 3 cards banished this way.
The price is twofold: the banished cards are lost for the rest of the duel (they can no longer be Special Summoned from the Extra Deck), and you cannot draw any more cards by other card effects for the rest of the turn. The choice between banishing 3 or 6 is therefore a trade-off between the card advantage gained and the risk of losing a key piece of your strategy — a Fusion, Synchro, Xyz or Link Monster you'll need later in the duel.
The more your Yu-Gi-Oh! Extra Deck contains copies of the same card, the higher your chances of keeping at least 1 after Pot of Extravagance — conversely, the smaller or more concentrated your Extra Deck, the higher the risk of losing them all. This is exactly what this calculator lets you anticipate before playing the card in a duel.
The mathematical formula
Letting N the number of cards in your Extra Deck, K the number of copies of the card you want to keep, and n the number of cards banished (3 or 6), this is a draw without replacement described by the hypergeometric law. The probability that all K copies get banished is:
P(tous bannis) = C(N−K, n−K) / C(N, n)
The probability that at least 1 remains is therefore simply 1 − P(tous bannis). The calculator applies this formula directly for each value of n, along with the full distribution for k = 0 to K copies banished.
