What is Small World in Yu-Gi-Oh!?

Small World is a Normal Spell considered one of the strongest consistency cards in the game. Starting from a monster in your hand, it lets you search any other monster in the Deck — as long as a "bridge card" connects the two.

In concrete terms, when you activate Small World, you send a monster from your hand to the graveyard (card A), then excavate the top of your Deck until a monster is revealed (card B, the bridge) and add that monster to your hand. For this excavation to work, card B must share exactly 1 of the following 5 categories with card A: Type, Attribute, Level/Rank/Link, ATK, DEF — neither 0, nor 2 or more.

The same rule applies between card B (the bridge) and card C, the monster you actually want from your Deck. Once bridge B is in hand, you can usually send it to the graveyard with a second Small World, or use it as material, to continue your combo toward C.

The strategic challenge is therefore to choose, when building your Yu-Gi-Oh! deck, the right bridge monsters to connect your starters to your key targets, while keeping a card ratio consistent with the rest of your strategy.

How to use the Bridge Finder

The 5 categories compared by Small World

Two monsters "match" on a category if their values are strictly identical:

  • Type : the monster type (Dragon, Spellcaster, Warrior…), independent of its category (Effect, Fusion, Xyz…).
  • Attribute : DARK, LIGHT, FIRE, WATER, WIND, EARTH or DIVINE.
  • Level/Rank/Link : treated as a single category under the current ruling.
  • ATK : the attack points must be strictly identical.
  • DEF : the defense points must be strictly identical (absent for Link Monsters).

If two monsters share 0, 2, 3, 4 or 5 of these categories, they do not form a valid chain — the bridge must touch exactly one category on each side.

Small World sends a monster from your hand to the Graveyard, then excavates the top of your Deck until it finds a monster that shares exactly 1 of the 5 categories (Type, Attribute, Level/Rank/Link, ATK, DEF) with the sent monster, and exactly 1 of these categories with a monster you declare from your Deck. This bridge monster joins your hand.
